The Norwegian Institute of Local History

The Norwegian institute of Local history (NLI) is a state institution under the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs. NLI encourages and promotes local and regional history in Norway. It was established in 1955.

NLI gives advice and supervision on all levels of ongoing work concerning town and county (“bygd”) books, as well as other local history related texts. We also review manuscripts to such works.

NLI is responsible for the website lokalhistorie.no. NLI also publishes sources, handbooks, overviews of literature and sources, questioners, as well as other aids for local historians. Together with the “National Federation of Local History Associations” (Landslaget for lokalhistorie), NLI publishes the magazine Lokalhistorisk magasin. NLI also organises seminars and conferences related to local history topics.

NLIs library and reading places are available to the public every weekday from 9 a.m. till 15 a.m., or according to special arrangements.

NLI’s board:
NLI has five permanent positions and a board consisting of five members. The board is appointed by the Culture and Church Affairs on behalf of the National Archives of Norway , Norwegian Museum Authorities, The Norwegian Historical Association, National Federation of Local History Associations, and the employees at NLI. Board members for the four year period, until the 31st of December 205 are: Jan E. Myhre (chairman), Lisabet Risa (vice- chairman), Alf Ragnar Nielsen, Åse Eikemo Strømme and Marianne Wiig.

NLI’s main aims are:

  • To stimulate a high professional and pedagogical level of research in local history in general and especially in local history books about city, rural communities (bygd) and regions.
  • To facilitate professional and pedagogical exchange of information to and between historical and local historical societies on all levels.

The aims are primarily met through four types of action: Consulting services, seminars, publications and facilitating contact in relation to local history issues.
